Tension Substitution Guide

I was organizing my notes for 6-horn writing recently, and I made a mechanical voicing tension substitution guide for it. The main purpose of it is to avoid the minor 9th interval in the voicing.

Clearly there is no rule of writing an instrument section, but this would be a great reference to start with.

Below is the content of the guide:

Diminished: only top note doubling can be substituted. For example: G Bb C# E G Bb can be substituted as G C C# E G Bb.

When 1 is in lead, 7 is unavailable. Use 6 for 7.
Cases: major, melodic Minor

When b3 is in lead, 9 is unavailable. Use 1 for 9.
Cases: all minor

When 3 is in lead, #9 is unavailable. Use b9 for #9.
Cases: all dominant chords with b9 and #9

When b5 is in lead, 11 is unavailable. Use b3 or b5 for 11.
Cases: Locrian

When 5 is in lead, #11 is unavailable. Use 5 for #11.
Cases: Lydian, Lydian b7

When b13 is in lead, 5 is unavailable. Use b13 or #11 for 5.
Cases: all dominant chords with b13

When 13 is in lead, #5 is unavailable. Very rarely you can encounter this issue.
Cases: Lydian augmented

When b7 is in lead, 13 is unavailable. Use 5 for 13.
Cases: Mixolydian (and its all variations), Dorian
